Several Auburn Tigers Fail to Live Up to Expectations in 2024
As the season approaches the halfway point, the Auburn Tigers are currently floundering at 2-4, a long cry from their expectations. The Tigers are without a win in SEC play and are on a three-game losing run. They have a difficult schedule ahead of them, with their next two games being away. A large portion of their lackluster performance can be attributed to important players not living up to expectations. Which players have disappointed the squad the most so far this season?
QB Payton Thorne
Payton Thorne, a fifth-year senior from Naperville, Illinois, has encountered difficulties in his second year as the quarterback for the Tigers. Thorne threw four interceptions in a disheartening loss to Cal, which resulted in his temporary loss of the starting job. After redshirt freshman Hank Brown struggled against Arkansas in the first half, he was able to recover the role. He leads the SEC in interceptions even though he attempts the fewest passes overall.
Against Oklahoma, Thorne looked promising, completing 21 of 32 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns. But in that game, the Tigers paid a heavy price for a crucial pick-six.
Cam Coleman, Wide Receiver
At six feet three inches, true freshman Cam Coleman from Phenix City, Alabama, came into the season as the top recruiter from Auburn’s 2024 class, and he had high hopes. Despite having only nine receptions for 212 yards and one score this season, Coleman is the highest-rated offensive recruit in program history and the fifth-best prospect in the country. Since sustaining a shoulder injury versus Cal in the second week, his performance has been compromised. His problems have been made worse by his continued troubles at quarterback.
Perry Thompson, Wide Receiver
Perry Thompson, a true freshman from Foley, Alabama, is also expected to have an immediate impact. Still, he has only gained 123 yards and one touchdown on four receptions. In contrast to some of his teammates who play wide receiver, Thompson has not had a lot of chances to excel. In the second part of the season, he wants to maximize his opportunities and move up the depth chart.
On Saturday, October 19, Auburn will be back on the field as they travel to Memorial Stadium to take on the No. 21 Missouri Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 or 11:45 a.m. CT, and ESPN or SEC Network will broadcast the action for fans.
