No. 7 Miami kicks off as a strong favorite against Virginia Tech.

Betting lines have Miami positioned as a heavy favorite this week. With a strong 4-0 record against non-conference opponents under their belt, the No. 7 Hurricanes will take on Virginia Tech to begin their ACC schedule.

In their following eight games, the Hurricanes will play every conference team in an effort to maintain the momentum gained from their non-conference triumph. Miami (4-0) is favored by 17 points to start the game against the Hokies at home after defeating South Florida 50–15 the previous Saturday. With an average victory margin of 45 points, Miami has covered the spread in all three of its games this season against FBS opponents.

This week marks the start of league play for Virginia Tech (2-2). The Hokies had a difficult start to the season, losing to Vanderbilt 34-27 and to Rutgers 26-23 last week at Lane Stadium. With an amazing average of 52.3 points per game, Miami’s scoring attack is ranked fourth in the country; on the other hand, their defense, which is ranked eleventh, limits opponents to just 10.3 points per game. Miami also excels in other important statistical categories.

With an offensive passing efficiency of 405 yards per game, the Hurricanes rank second in the nation. With 1,439 yards and 14 touchdowns, quarterback Cam Ward leads the country. He completes 72.4% of his passes with just two interceptions. Miami leads the country in defensive sack average, with four per game game, and ranks sixth in run defense, allowing just 64 rushing yards per game.

With a defense that gives up 22.8 points per game, Virginia Tech averages 29.5 points per game. This season, the Hokies’ pass rush, which averages 3.25 sacks per game, has been a noticeable strength. Antwuan Powell-Ryland, a defensive end, is tied for the nation lead with 5.5 sacks.

Kyron Drones, the quarterback, has run for 209 yards and two touchdowns in addition to throwing for 765 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. A standout offensive player, running back Bhayshul Tuten has 391 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

The Hurricanes defeated Virginia Tech 20–14 in Blacksburg during their most recent meeting, which took place in 2022. Since both schools joined the ACC in 2004, Miami has a slim 10-9 advantage and leads the all-time series versus the Hokies, 25-15. The Hurricanes have triumphed over Virginia Tech in their previous three meetings.

The Hurricanes want to outperform their campaign from the previous year as they head into ACC play. They had a similar 4-0 start against non-conference opponents in 2023, but their first ACC game was painful, falling to Georgia Tech 23-20. The game versus Virginia Tech is scheduled to take off on Friday at 7:30 p.m. EST and will be televised on ESPN.
